This ride leaves Harrisburg at 9am and accent into the Shawnee Hills near Womble Mt. These hills are visible on your left as you leave Harrisburg. You will begin to note rock formations as we travel southeast to Herod. Prominate geological features are a hallmark of the Shawnee Hills. There is a Volcanic Dome(Hick's Dome)located a few miles to the southwest.
Following a left turn on to Karbars Ridge Road, you will begin to see panaramic views of the rock escarpment that runs completely acrossed Southern Illinois from the Ohio River to Mississippi River.
Many of the pine plantations along the road were planted by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) back in the 30's. The Illinois Federation of Womens Clubs were major financial contributers to the reforestation of the Shawnee National Forest.
Take note of the Church on your left. You'll see it again later.
Just past the town of Karbers Ridge, at the large Arrowhead Lodge sign, we turn right to follow a winding, hilly road towards Elizabethtown on the Ohio River. The Historic Rose Hotel and a floating cafe are two of the attributes of "E'town".
The ride next turns north on State Hwy 146, but not for long as a right turn is made onto the Tower Rock Road. The ride follows along the Ohio to Cave In Rock where we visit the State Park and take the free ferry to Kentucky.
Once off the Ferry continues towards Marion, Kentucky's Amish Shops. Yoder's store and sawmill is located on the right. At Marion the ride heads for Mattoon and then north at the old country store. Several farm produce markets are along the travel route as we back to the ferry.Extra caution is needed in the Amish area . Slow moving buggies and wagons on the roads are to be expected along with slippery driving surfaces.
The route turns back North on Ky 91 to the Ferry at Cave-in-Rock. Acrossed the Ohio it continues North on Illinois 1 to the Karbers Ridge Road. There a left turn is made towards Pounds Hollow and Rimrock Trail. Then a right turn towards the Garden of the Gods Recreation area and Wilderness.
Turn Left and go North to Glen O. Jones Lake. This is part of the Saline County Conservation Area providing camping and day use. Then its on to Harrisburg acrossed a flat area which was once the bottom of a prehistoric lake referred to as "Great Saline Lake"
We hope you have enjoyed the ride and will come back again. TAG-ALONG.
